Russell 2000 rebalance dates 2027
Once a year, FTSE Russell rebuilds its US indexes from scratch: every eligible company is ranked by market capitalisation, and the Russell 2000 — the benchmark tracked by IWM and other small-cap ETFs — resets its membership. The reconstitution is one of the biggest single-day trading events of the year, and the stocks on the Russell 2000 additions list often move for weeks before the effective close. Here are the dates that matter for the 2027 rebalance.

What the Russell rebalance is
Unlike the S&P SmallCap 600 or the S&P 500, which change membership by committee whenever a slot opens, the Russell 2000 is rebuilt by rule once a year. On rank day (April 30) every eligible US-listed company is sorted by market cap: the largest 1,000 form the Russell 1000, the next 2,000 form the Russell 2000. Companies that grew past the boundary move up, those that shrank drop in or out, and new listings enter for the first time.
Preliminary additions and deletions are published after the close in late May and updated weekly as corporate actions settle, before the lists lock in and the rebalance takes effect after the close on the fourth Friday of June — Jun 25, 2027 for the 2027 cycle. The previous reconstitution took effect in June 2026.
Why it moves small-cap stocks
Funds tracking the Russell 2000 must hold every member by the effective close, so the rebalance forces billions of dollars of buying in the additions and selling in the deletions on a single day. That flow is telegraphed weeks in advance: from the preliminary list onward, traders position around the names crossing the boundary, and both volume and volatility in small-caps typically peak on the effective close.
Russell 2000 membership resets after the close on Jun 25, 2027 — in 282 days.
