How Nikkei 225 additions work
Nikkei reviews constituents once a year in early October; changes take effect at the start of October trading. Stocks are also removed ad hoc on delisting or designation to the liquidation post. A change is announced first and only takes effect after the close on the effective date. Between those two dates, every fund tracking the index (1321.T, 1330.T, EWJ) has to buy the incoming stock, which is why the window matters to traders.
Across the 6 Nikkei 225 additions tracked here, the median notice between the announcement and the effective close is 27 days.
What happens to a stock after it joins Nikkei 225
Inclusion is often described as a guaranteed pop. The tracked history is more mixed: the average stock ran up +2.9% in the 30 days into the effective close, then returned +1.7% in the first week (83% of additions were positive), +1.2% after one month, and +35.6% after a year. Returns are measured from the effective close and can also be viewed against the index itself, so a rising market doesn't get counted as an inclusion effect.
Best one-year outcome in this set: 7453.T (Ryohin Keikaku) at +122.8%. Worst: 3092.T (ZOZO) at -20.1%.
